is being the boss fun?

Ah! It feels good to be back in the rhythm of writing to you creators - hope you’ve had a great week!

Speaking of rhythm, I was reminded this week of how important it is! Our nanny called in sick last minute and was out at the start of the week meaning we had no child care. My wife and I both work full-time with no family in the US so…

TO THE BATTLE STATIONS! 🤣

As I’m writing this to you now, our Nanny is thankfully feeling better and we have support again but it was a good reminder of how important it is to setup the systems in your life that when things do happen (which they will!) you’re not completely thrown off.

The Value of Systems

You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.

I love this quote from James Clear’s Atomic Habits.

In Cohort 1 of Gaming Creator Accelerator, this book was a favorite among students and we took many of the concepts from this book and applied them to content creation. (p.s. to be the first to know when Cohort 2 opens, sign up to the waitlist here)

One thing I've learned in my own journey of building systems and supporting some of the biggest creators in the industry build them (like StoneMountain64), is that you can't compare your system to someone else's. By trying to emulate another's system, you can quickly fall into a trap. It's impossible to know how that system really works or how long it took them to master it.

We all build systems in our life, some of us are a little more obsessive (👋that’s me!) about it than others.

Building a system can be as simple as putting your toothbrush next to the tooth paste, all the way to meal prepping, or having a “SOP” (standard operating procedure) when working with your editor.

If you’re like me… you’re probably putting off a system right now that you know you would make your life a little easier.

The system glaring me in the face right now is that I need to have back up child care for when situations like this week inevitably happen!

What is it for you?

Could you create a better process around your YouTube videos? Dedicated time to research, script, record and edit?

Instead of trying to tackle all of those pieces at once, you might consider chunking it down to the smallest thing, and focus on building a system around that first.

Build Your Systems

If you’re feeling some resistance to doing that I highly recommend listening to the podcast episode I just recorded with StoneMountain64.

We talk about what it’s like “being the boss.”

At first, being your own boss feels fun and then the responsibility sets in 🤣

In the Creator CEO podcast, here’s a snippet of what Stone and I cover:

  1. How ACTION creates CLARITY: As creators and entrepreneurs, we can wait too long for inspiration to strike before doing the thing we need to do.

  2. Battling Procrastination: You need to make it stupidly easy “to do the thing.” Often, putting one foot in front of the other can give us the inspiration, motivation and momentum we need to accomplish our bigger goal

  3. Setting SMART Goals: We all know how it feels when we miss a goal, it sucks! There’s a framework that helps you set goals that still honor your ambition but make it more likely for you to hit them so you stay motivated.

You can listen to the full episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

I hope you enjoy the episode; my goal with our podcast is that there’s one little nugget in it that helps you get closer to your goals :)

Hope you enjoy the rest of your week and this was a nudge towards building that system that helps you weather the inevitable storms that come up in life.

p.s. that’s my own reminder to find back up child care 😉

See you next week!
